Financial support in times of the Corona pandemic

The following financial aids are currently available for students in the supervision area of the Studierendenwerk Freiburg-Schwarzwald:

Studierendenwerk Emergency Fund

A help for students who have run into financial difficulties due to the lack of financial support from their parents as a result of the Corona pandemic.  The support is provided on a loan basis and is intended to enable students to continue their studies.

Short-term support is granted for a maximum period of three months, with a maximum amount of 500 euros/month. A separate application must be made for each month. Instalments are agreed upon for the repayment. Repayment begins at the latest six months after receipt of the last instalment. The application is processed in the department "Financial Aid" of the Studierendenwerk Freiburg. Before the application is processed by the loan office, it is mandatory that the "Financial Aid" and the BAföG-Kurzberatung of the Studierendenwerk have consulted with you. The support with a short-term loan is granted within the framework of the available funds. A legal claim does not exist.

Please send us a short justification for your application by email to Ms. Annika Tsalkatis, see Contact & Info.
We will then send you the relevant documents for your application.

  • German students can apply for the loan for the months of April and May (up to a maximum total of 900 euros);
  • International students can apply for the loan for the months of April, May and June (maximum total of up to 1,350 euros).

Repayment of the loan begins at the latest at the beginning of June 2021, with a minimum instalment of 75 euros.

Emergency Student Aid of the University Freiburg

In cooperation with the Studierendenwerk Freiburg, the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg supports its students with a emergency student aid. This is a support programme for students who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in financial difficulties - for example due to the Corona crisis - and which provides financial support of up to 300 euros per month for a period of up to three months. The support does not have to be paid back. All students of the Albert-Ludwigs-University are entitled to apply. Application and payment of the grant is handled by the Studierendenwerk Freiburg, see also Contact & Info.

An online application form will be available here on the website shortly.

KfW-student loans - Corona aid

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has set up a bridging loan within the framework of the KfW student loans. Applications can be made through the Studierendenwerk Freiburg. Contact and further information on the KfW student loan - corona assistance can be found here.

BAföG in times of Corona

Corona also changes a lot in BAföG (Federal Training Assistance Act). Possibly your claim has changed due to a financial emergency. You can get more information here.

German Federal Emergency Fund for Studentenwerke

In addition to its KfW student loans, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has also announced an emergency fund with grants for students in need. A total of 100 million euros are to be distributed via the Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) to all student unions (Studentenwerke) in the country. Students who have no further entitlement to support can apply for a financial grant from their local Studentenwerk and are currently working at full speed on the infrastructure and implementation. It is expected that applications can be submitted from mid-June onwards.
