Students who do not come from an academic family have different options to get financial support for their studies.

In the following we introduce two of them: is a non-profit initiative to promote higher education for non-academic children. Its 75 local groups are staffed by 6,000 volunteers, who encourage talented high school students across the country to pursue higher education and guide first-generation college students through the college experience.

In 2017 has reached more than 30,000 prospective students in direct conversations - at schools, at fairs, in workshops and on the information telephone. 

The Studierendenwerk offers a maximum of ten students from non-academic families €1,000 each to help them start their studies. The interest-free loan without guarantee must be repaid no later than six months after the start of studies. The project "Running Mates" of the University of Freiburg aims to support students from non-academic households. It offers a workshop program for key competencies as well as a network of experienced students who assist first-year students.
