Homeshare“ facilitates a living-partnership between students and the citizens of Freiburg and the surrounding area. Renters (for example: seniors, families, and those too busy with work), who requires some form of help, offer accommodations and rooms to students, who agree to help the renters with their required needs.

The contracting party is the renter. They will offer a normal housing contract. Studierendenwerk is merely the mediator for the partnership.

You will need to acquire and fill out an application, which will then need to be given or sent to us. Your information will be collected and considered. Please bring any and all materials to Studierendenwerk or send them by email to

Participants can be students, who have applied through Studierendenwerk; as well as renters in Freiburg and the surrounding area.

This question cannot be accurately answered, because it depends on the number of rooms available, who is renting, etc. One could expect to wait at least one to two weeks, but it could take longer.

There are always available room offers, but this question is difficult to answer, because it depends mostly on if the student can find an offer suitable to their situation. In general, it is more difficult to find rooms and offers at the beginning of the semester than it is for the rest of the year.

How much time you´re expected to spend on the tasks varies by offer. It will depend on the needs of your renter. Although in most cases, one is expected to spend between 10 and 40 hours a month on their tasks.

No. The rules state that you will receive a reduction in rent for your help, but it will not compensate for everything. The better your housing and the less you need to work, the more rent you will have to pay. Rule of thumb is: one hour of help per month for a one square meter room, plus any additional expenses.

It is important that you and the renter forge a strong partnership by getting to know one another, as soon as you both finalize your agreement. Should there be any serious problems, Studierendenwerk will help you.
