Social benefits during your studies
Special regulations apply to students during their studies. BAföG is the primary form of state support available to cover living expenses. In certain exceptional cases, students may also be entitled to other social benefits. Here we provide a rough overview of the benefits available. However, as these are usually individual cases, we recommend that you come to us for advice in advance so that we can find the best solution for you.
The BAföG is a government grant that supports first-time students at universities. Whether BAföG is granted depends on various factors such as age, nationality or residence status, and income and assets, including those of the parents.
At our BAföG short consultation, you can get non-binding advice from our BAföG office and clarify any initial questions you may have.
Students are generally not entitled to housing allowance, as BAföG is primarily intended to finance their studies and already includes a rent subsidy.
However, there are exceptions to this rule, for example if you are no longer eligible for BAföG or if you have children living in your household.
We would be happy to advise you on the best solution for your individual situation.
Full-time students are not entitled to ALG I.
However, students enrolled in part-time programs with a maximum time commitment of 14.9 hours per week (including preparation and follow-up work) are eligible to receive unemployment benefits. To substantiate this, a certificate from the university is required in accordance with § 139 SGB III, which shows the time commitment of the program.
Similar to housing benefits, students are not entitled to ALG II benefits.
However, different rules apply during a semester off. If you are planning to take a semester off, please come to our social counseling service in advance. We can then provide you with information about your financial options during a semester off.

Networking meetings for student parents take place from time to time.
Childcare at our other locations
Students with children in Offenburg have the opportunity to use childcare close to the university. This is based on an agreement between the university, the Studierendenwerk Freiburg and the city of Offenburg, which provides places for students in its municipal district and family centre in Uffhofen.
Upon application, the Studierendenwerk subsidises the monthly childcare fee for children under the age of three in the amount of the difference between the daycare fees of the Uffhofen district centre and the cost of a daycare place in the Studierendenwerk facilities in Freiburg. Only students receive this subsidy from the Studierendenwerk!

The Studierendenwerk cooperates with the Catholic Family Centre, the city of Furtwangen and Furtwangen University to make it easier for students with children to study. The day care centre offers childcare for children from eight weeks to primary school age.

Während des Studiums gelten für Studierende besondere Regelungen. Zur Deckung des Lebensunterhalts gibt es als staatliche Unterstützungsleistung primär das BAföG. In bestimmten Ausnahmefällen können Studierende auch Anspruch auf andere Sozialleistungen haben. Hier geben wir euch einen groben Überblick über die Leistungen. Da es sich hierbei jedoch in der Regel um Einzelfälle handelt, empfehlen wir euch vorab zu uns in die Beratung zu kommen, damit wir für euch die beste Lösung finden können.
Mit dem BAföG wird vom Staat die erste Ausbildung an Hochschulen unterstützt. Ob BAföG gewährt wird, hängt von verschiedenen Faktoren wie zum Beispiel dem Alter, der Staatsangehörigkeit beziehungsweise dem Aufenthaltsstatus und dem Einkommen und Vermögen, auch der Eltern ab.
Bei uns in der BAföG Kurzberatung könnt ihr euch unverbindlich von unserem BAföG- Amt beraten lassen und erste Fragen klären.
Studierende haben in der Regel keinen Anspruch auf Wohngeld, da primär das BAföG für die Studienfinanzierung vorgesehen ist und hierin bereits ein Mietzuschuss enthalten ist.
Hierbei gibt es jedoch Ausnahmen, wenn zum Beispiel dem Grunde nach kein Anspruch auf BAföG mehr besteht oder Kinder mit im Haushalt leben.
Wir beraten euch gerne zu der besten Lösung für eure individuelle Situation.
Studierende in einem Vollzeitstudium haben keinen Anspruch auf ALG I.
In einem Teilzeitstudium mit einem zeitlichen Aufwand von maximal 14,9 Stunden pro Woche (inklusive Vor- und Nachbereitung) ist der Bezug von Arbeitslosengeld jedoch möglich. Zur Glaubhaftmachung ist eine Bescheinigung der Hochschule gemäß § 139 SGB III erforderlich, aus der der zeitliche Umfang des Studiums ersichtlich ist.
Ähnlich wie bei dem Bezug von Wohngeld haben Studierende auch keinen Anspruch auf ALG II Leistungen.
