Housing Eligibility Certificate (WBS)

For a large part of our family apartments in the Studentensiedlung as well as in the dormitory at Falkenbergerstraße 20a in Freiburg, which is subsidized by the 'Young Living' program, a housing eligibility certificate (WBS) from the state of Baden-Württemberg is required. 

The WBS is official proof that you meet the requirements to move into social housing. It must be issued in Baden-Württemberg and is then also valid for Baden-Württemberg. Foreign students with a residence permit (visa) of at least one year can also apply for this. However, there is no guarantee of a room in a hall of residence in the SWFR, despite the WBS.

Income limit for the person moving into the accommodation (not the parents): max. €60,350 gross annual income (as of 2026)

International students can apply for a WBS if they are permitted to stay in Baden-Württemberg for at least one year. They must provide proof of a residence permit valid for more than one year.

  If you already live in Baden-Württemberg, ask your local authority about applying for a WBS. Smaller municipalities usually process WBS applications much more quickly.

• The WBS is valid for a maximum of one year. Once you have moved in, it does not need to be renewed.
• The WBS is not a guarantee for an apartment or a place in a hall of residence in the SWFR.
• The Wohnberechtigungsschein does not include any cash benefits, such as housing benefit or Bafög: Housing benefit or Bafög.
