Scholarships
There is also the possibility to finance the studies through a scholarship. The Studierendenwerk also awards scholarships - partly from its own funds and for students of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität additionally financed by donations, in particular from Alumni e.V., Verband der Freunde e.V. and the Maria-Ladenburger Stiftung.
- Annual award in the winter semester to socially committed students
- Applications in summer
- Up to four scholarships, 250 €/ month, limited to 2 semesters
- Scholarships are awarded on the basis of proposals, e.g. from associations, institutions, private individuals.
- Self-applications are not possible
- Voluntary work must have existed for at least 1 year and must continue during the period of the scholarship.
- Voluntary work can be related to studies, but should not be a compulsory part of them.
- A committee, usually consisting of three student representatives of the administrative board of the Studierendenwerk and three employees of the Studierendenwerk, decides on the awarding of the scholarship.

All students enrolled at the Albert Ludwig University who will be in their 1st or 2nd bachelor’s semester or their 1st master’s semester in the upcoming winter semester are eligible to apply.
The funding period covers one semester, and the amount of support is adjusted to individual needs, up to a maximum of €2,400 in total!

Thanks to a new cooperation with Arbeiterkind.de, an organization that supports students who are the first in their family to pursue a university degree, scholarship holders can benefit from a one-year peer-to-peer mentoring program with regular meetings and advisory services.
The scholarship offer is aimed at advanced, needy foreign students or advanced, needy German students with one parent from a non-European culture who are interested in working on international projects or doing integration work in Germany/Europe.
Students who are studying at a university affiliated with the Studierendenwerk Freiburg in a state examination, master's or doctoral program are eligible to apply.
The amount of the two-year grant is 500 euros per month.
Multilingualism is a prerequisite for application.
Start of funding from January 2026
Scholarship holders undertake to submit a short written report every year.

Students with outstanding achievements can receive financial and non-material support for their academic education. There are 13 major scholarships for the gifted in Germany, which are awarded to students and doctoral candidates. Above-average performance, social or societal commitment are relevant in the application process.
The requirements for financial support are set by the funding guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The basic scholarship for students depends on their own income as well as assets and the income of their parents or spouse. It amounts to a maximum of 752 euros per month. In addition, scholarship holders receive a monthly flat-rate tuition allowance of 300 euros - doctoral students receive a scholarship of 1,350 euros per month.
