The city of Tianjin is considered to be the gate to the Chinese capital of Beijing. It is situated about 140km to the northeast of Beijing on the east coast of China and has about 12,3 million inhabitants. It ranks among the most important Chinese cities and is, thanks to its harbor, a powerful economic metropolis not far from the political center of the capital. Tianjin is regarded as an excellent center of education with a great number of universities of different subject areas. The Nankai University of Tianjin was founded in 1919 and counts among the oldest Chinese universities. It is also one of the top 5 universities of the country.
The program offers insights into the history and traditions of this vibrant city at the gates of Beijing. We will be visiting the old courtyard, the Tianjin museum, old and traditional streets, Chinese temples and other landmarks of the town.
Next to the traditional aspects of Tianjin, we will have the opportunity to also get to know the modern side of the metropolis. As many other Chinese cities, Tianjin is in progress of being fundamentally changed and modernized. We will also consider the question of how to create such a change and how to find it in the actual city today.
Another trip of several days' Duration will lead us to Beijing, the capital of China. The capital has around 35 million inhabitants and ranks among the biggest monopolies that modern world politics focuses on. Especially since the 2008 Olympics, Beijing as a modern city has moved to the center of world attention. On a visit of the Forbidden City, the Palace of the Chinese Emperor, we will be able to touch the 3000-year-old history of China. A visit of the Tian An Men Square, the Square of “heavenly peace” will then lead us to an important place of modern Chinese history. A trip to the Great Wall is also on the agenda. The Great Wall of China is considered to have an incomparable size and symbolizes Chinese fortitude in modern China.
